Ask them what they thought kids their age did in this area or how they lived.Ask them to identify items they saw in the surrounding the area of the masks and what they may have meant.The grounds are well excavated and the buildings and pathways are well maintained. The Kohunlich ruins are definitely worth the trip. This was a 2.5 hour drive from Costa Maya to Kohunlich then Dzibanche was nearby. The tour also included the Dzibanche Ruins as well. Luckily, some of the architecture held their interest long enough to ask questions. We went to Kohunlich on an excursion with Oceania cruises. We gave them summaries of what we learned from the guide and pointed out what building they were looking at used to be. ![]() Close your eyes and imagine how this place looked back then using what’s left of the ruins.We engaged them in a few activities to experience these amazing ruins that maybe you can try with your kids. This place is made up of a series of architectural complexes of a ceremonial nature as a residence, some of which could function as neighborhoods or high-level. The ride from Costa Maya to Kohunlich Ruins takes two hours, with a possible rest stop at Bacalar for bathrooms, gas and for our guests to stretch legs. But, we also wanted our kids to walk away from here with some knowledge. This archaeological site sits on a jungle-backed grassy area. Love Oceana cruises One of our stops as in Costa Maya, Mexico and we took a 2 1/2 hour coach ride toward the bordr of Belive where we explored first-hand the ancient dwellings of Dizbanche. Theyre not nearly as crowded as Tulum and Chichen Itza, and theyre much more interactive. We knew it would be a challenge to keep them occupied but one of the great things about Kohunlich was the expansive grassy areas to run around in and structures to climb and explore. My hubby and I took a 10 day 'Mayan Mystique' cruise with Oceana - Riviera Ship on 18-28 March 2014. The Mayan ruins at Kohunlich are a worthwhile visit from Xcalak. There is a set of three masks ascending the pyramid, on either side of the pyramids steps. These Mayan ruins can only hold kids’ interests for a limited time. Kohunlich Mayan Ruins have unique stone masks, each about 8 feet high.
